No, it’s not my birthday today, yes I already celebrated my birthday in February and yes, this is being posted in May 😂 Wait, hear me out first, I was going through my old posts like I always do, just as a way to reminisce on different memories, was reading through when I realized I had posted a birthday post for the last two years (Birthday post’18 and Birthday Post ’19) but didn’t make any for this year and that actually made me sad. It’s something I definitely want to do every year henceforth, to update you on whatever I’m up to and because it’s always nice to be able to come back to read them.

So I turned 20 three months ago! But first, let’s take a minute to talk about 19 yeah, it was great! (Wait, catch up on where I was then from Birthday Post ’19)

It was a very interesting year and I enjoyed it for the most part. So I’m not exactly the travelling type (wait till money comes then that statement is changing 😂) but I got to travel for a bit last year. I went to Mexico! Bro, I actually travelled by myself via a 16 hour bus ride to Mexico, (felt so proud of myself 😂), the trip is a whole new gist on its own though so I’d have to make another post for that (be on the lookout).

Guess what? I also got to go home! Got to visit my family and friends and enjoyed every bit of it. See, I had made a list of all the foods I wanted to eat (if you know me, you know the number 1, hints, it starts with F and ends with FU 😂😂) all I did was eat, sleep and play, even had a fun photoshoot for a fashion designer ( see attached pictures below, shout out to Eudeau coutures, hmu for her contact details) and boy oh boy, that was one memorable day.

Later in the year, I also got to visit my aunt in Illinois, it was really nice seeing her again and I enjoyed getting to visit another state in the US outside of Texas, I was there in the winter and it was beautiful to see it snow for the first time. School was a mixed feelings typa situation, first semester of junior year started off a lil rocky due to a number of reasons but thankfully your girl still pulled through.

I’m thankful for the past year, thankful for community, for family and friendships, for the old ones that grew stronger and the new ones developed. For good health, for growth.

Turning 20 brought mixed reactions. A part of me was excited to finally be able to claim not being a teenager anymore but tbh, the other part wasn’t as excited and lowkey scared. Hearing things around about how 20’s are like the most crucial years of one’s life and even sometimes the hardest too didn’t help, it’s not like anyone around me was telling me this, was just mostly from the media.

If you know me, then you know I’m a child at heart, so the feeling of getting old isn’t as exciting sometimes, lol. I know it might not make sense but I remember feeling very unprepared to grow up, like if I told someone I’m 20, I’d be deceiving them cos I feel like I’m 5 years younger than that. (It’s like writing on your resume that you’re an expert on Excel but have only ever done a few basic graphs here and there, you feel me?)😂😂

All this to say, one thing I’ve learnt is that no one has actually gotten their crap together, everyone is figuring it out as they go, learning and unlearning and that’s what I’m about too. So it’s not about being 20 and feeling old or feeling intimidated, it’s about learning and growing better with each day that passes. So howbeit late this might be, cheers to a great 20🥂

I wanna hear from you! Talk to me in the comments below. How do you feel about your birthdays as the years go by? And is there anyone out there like me that just lowkey wants to be a child?😂

P.S there’s a good chance this is the last post from the blog as it is but super excited for the new developments in store for you and can’t wait!

This was an interesting read, I’m not much of a traveller too, I think the farthest I’ve travelled this year, is from my living room to my bathtub.
    Lovely shots btw.

Good one! 👍Whenever it’s my birthday, I’m always super excited. At least, it’s a reminder that I’m not getting younger 😃 and I have a lot in store for me to do and I’m moving closer to my dreams. I don’t low key want to be a child😂 I love growth and you know it’s a constant thing.
About a month ago, I read a book – The defining decade: why your 20s matter. I learnt that twenties is the time to get busy with one’s life. It is a forward thinking period for an uncertain age or time. It’s a time to claim your adulthood intentionally.

Thanks for reading Demilade! You’re right, growth is a constant thing. That does sound like a great book, I’ll check it out. Thanks!

  • […] Writing Birthday Post 20 who knew I’d spend most of my 20th year, at home, in a pandemic! Thanks to miss Rona. Oh well, 20th year was a wild one, one like never before with a lot of unexpected situations, but all in all, it was a great year and I am truly thankful. I got to do a whole lot of introspection, invested in personal development more than I had ever done. The whole rona crazy really forced me to spend time with myself and learn more about things I didn’t even know. […]
