Since the departure of Neymar and Barcelona receiving €222M from the deal , Barcelona has gone ahead to spend over €350M in transfers plunging their financial budget into red. Their wage bill is the highest in the whole Europe with Lionel Messi leading the line as the highest earner. It doesn’t help that most of their new signings have flopped and the money spent on them seems like a waste.
Barcelona plans to buy Lautauro Martinez for €111M (release clause) and still chase after Neymar for a fee above €150M. All these was before the CoronaVirus pandemic and the club was hit really bad. They had to force their players to take 70% pay cut during the lockdown and are looking at reducing their salaries.
The virus comes as a blessing in disguise for Barcelona as they no longer have the financial capabilities to go after these players and will look to sell some dead-weights in order to fund those transfers. This, in turn will reduce the clubs wage bill as they also plan to revise the contracts of certain top earners.
Players on the chopping block are Nelson Semedo, Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal, Philipe Coutinho and possibly Ousmane Dembele if his fitness issues are not resolved. With the sale of these players, they will hope to still bring in Lautauro Martinez, who will not be a top earner and the chase for Neymar is dead already. They will look to give players like Todibo,Alena, Fati, Riqui Puig a shot at the first team with new signing Trincao getting his shot and also not a top earner.
According to sources, Barcelona are still planning a final proposal to bring Neymar Jr back to Camp Nou, but that will be an almost impossible task considering his wages. Messi is also working on a contract renewal which will see his present wages increase to almost a million pound weekly before taxes.
By next season, Barcelona will have a more youthful squad with an eased wage. We will get to see most of the youth players the fans have clamoured for, all these if the board follows this part. If they end up keeping those old players and still go ahead to sign top earners then the club will plumit into debt and financial crisis which they might not be able to recover from.
Its exciting to see how the summer will pan out for Barcelona and the direction they will take but all will be decided based on the trophies they are able to win at the end of the season. They are top in LaLiga table and also in the Round of 16 of the Champions League against Napoli (awaiting 2nd leg at Camp Nou).

They will let their dead weights go at the lowest price possible in order to sell them. No one is lining up big bucks for them.

I’m really hoping Barcelona can scale through to the end of the season.
From all indications, they will retain the league title. Only problem will be the Champions league.
